Hot flushes that drinks alcohol with face?
In cold winter, there is something that Jack Frost stamps on the face of people in the street one by one, and that is the reddened cheek and nose. There are relatively many blood vessels on face compared to the other areas of the body. Unlike the lips that look red because of many blood vessels and the thin layer of the skin, a nose and cheek can also look red due to some reasons as the blood vessels get extended and the blood rushes such areas. Especially during winter, there are many factors that naturally make the blood vessels extend based on our living condition, such as staying indoors with a great temperature difference from outside, frequently having hot beverage or food, and so on. Thus, a reddish face is often seen especially during the winter.
Nonetheless, there are certain people who often hear, “Your face is so red. Did you drink a lot?” or “Are you embarrassed?” Such people are the ones with hot flushes. Hot flushes make one’s face burn with minor emotional or temperature change or without a particular reason. In fact hot flushes do not call an immediate medical treatment, but often cause misunderstanding for people with hot flushes. As such, many people are seriously concerned about this bothering symptom.
The cause of hot flushes - the autonomic nervous system, emotional change, systemic diseases
The hot flushes caused by an embarrassing emotional fluctuation
Being reddish on face or neck when one is excited, angry, embarrassed, or shy is related with the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic nerve that forms the autonomic nervous system ? uncontrollable with one’s will ? catches a signal and speeds up the heart beat when one faces a situation mentioned above. During such time, hot flushes happen as the blood vessels on face are extended and blood rushes into the face. Further, such symptom is more intense when one can not cope with a psychological or stressful situation.
The hot flushes caused by the heat production to adjust oneself in a low temperature
When the weather gets cold, our body produces heat to adapt to this change, and because of this our body parts can be reddened from ears whose skin layer is thinnest, and then the nose and cheek. As the blood vessels are extended and blood rushes, the face can be reddened, but if there is a problem in the blood vessels, such symptom would last regardless of temperature. In addition, if our body is exposed to cold for a log period of time, teeth and the body are trembled to produce heat and to reduce the amount of radiating heat from our body, our body gets crouched or the blood vessels can be contracted. During such time, the lips or face may get either blue or white as the blood vessels are contracted.
The hot flushes caused by eating hot or spicy food or drinking alcohol
When one cannot neutralize alcohol well, it makes his/her face red. It is the sign of ‘not a body for alcohol’ so to speak, because lacks the decomposing enzyme for alcohol. Hot and spicy food, walnuts, cheese, and chocolates stimulates the autonomic nervous system, thus, may cause hot flushes.
The hot flushes caused by taking a vasodilator
When taking medicines for hypertension (Nifedipine, Verapamil), heart disease (Nitro Glycerin), hyperlipidemia, tuberculosis (Rifampin),, hot flushes may occur more frequently, and upon the termination of the medication the symptom will disappear.
The hot flushes caused by exposure to a hot temperature, such as sauna or fomenting room
High temperature makes the blood vessels in the body enlarge to discharge heat. Especially, the blood vessel around cheek on face that has a lot of vessels expands more to make face red.
The total hot flushes caused by a physical problem or disease
Carcinoid syndrome (a tumor of Carcinoid cell that secretes various hormones), diabetes, Mastocytosis, a tumor in the pancreas, kidney, or adrenal, the cold sensitivities may cause the hot flushes, and thus, it requires an internal diagnosis. The hot flushes during menopause caused by hormonal change
The hot flushes that 75% of women in the menopausal period are experiencing is because the body temperature rises. This symptom disappears within 2 years for 80% of them, but some reported that the symptoms lasted about 5 years. When weather is hot or one is under stress, in other words, external factors may worsen the symptom, and it also triggers a trouble in sleeping and fatigue as major causes that torment the women in the menopausal stage
The hot flushes caused by other factors
- Being exposed to sunlight (ultraviolet rays) often damages resilience fiber that is wrapping the blood vessels and causes hot flushes as the blood vessels gets transparent. - When there is atopic problem or pimples on skin, hot flushes may occur as an aftereffect of the blood vessel expansion.
How is the hot flushes treated?
After determining the major causes of hot flushes, an appropriate treatment will be given. When the symptom is due to an internal disease, it has to be treated before taking care of hot flushes.
If one gets emotional easily even to a trivial thing...
For a person who has a hot temper and often experiences frequent emotional swings or is so timid that it is hard to hide what he/she feels on his face, it is recommended to consult with a psychiatrist to stabilize the states of emotion. Certain medication that prevents excessive stimulation of the autonomic nerves may be
Regular exercise and peace in heart are important for the women in the menopause
Continuous light exercise like jogging can help one can stabilize mind, and by having the estrogen-rich foods such as beans and tofu, one can overcome the menopausal disorder. If the symptom is severe, the hormone therapy can be accompanied and it is recommended to consult with a medical professional.
Moderation in drinking is the best remedy for the face that gets red when drinking
Worrying about the reddening face after drinking although one does not have a sufficient ability to decompose alcohol is same as the mind that wish a car to go with water. One’s drinking capacity has nothing to do with learning, thus, never ignore such signal the body is sending and try to drink in moderation.
Taking vitamin K that hardens skin and blood vessels
It is effective to take vitamin K that hardens the drooped capillary vessels and skin or apply vitamin-rich cream. Foods rich in vitamin K are seaweeds like brown seaweed, laver, or kelp and green leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach.
Other medication
The ointment with antibiotic substances has side effects as it enlarge blood vessels, thus, nonsteroidal drugs are recently used. Such medication has to last minimum of 6 months, and further surgical intervention may be decided to monitor the result of using the ointment.
The blood vessel laser treatment that destroys only the expanded blood vessels
If there is a pigmentation on a certain part on the face because of the severe blood expansion or pigmentation that causes hot flushes or one experience a serious skin trouble as an aftereffect such as a tumor, a more active medical intervention may be considered.
By using homodyne laser that is applicable only to blood vessels, the major cause of hot flushes can be removed as the laser selectively destroys the enlarged blood vessels. Depending on cases, the laser treatment is performed 3-5 times in 4 weeks interval, and there may be a light level of flushing and swelling (about 1-2 days, may last 2 weeks maximum). Recently, the multi-wavelength laser whose treatment intensity is not stronger than the homodyne laser is proven to destroy both short and long blood vessels simultaneously and is used to minimize aftereffects like bruise and swelling.
Further, the nerve block treatment that prevents the expansion of blood vessels by blocking the sympathetic nerve can be applied.
Ways to prevent and caring for hot flushes
1. Avoid exposure to hot temperature. A period of time for bath or sauna should be short and try not to use a fomentation room.
2. Apply ultraviolet ray (major cause of destroying resilience fiber and the expansion of blood vessels) block cream and moisturizing cream.
3. Wear thick clothes to keep the whole body warm when cold and try to wear a mask.
4. When entering from a cold place to a warm area, wrap both cheeks and massage them.
5. Avoid too hot and spicy food. Try no to have walnuts, cheese, chocolate, and alcohol.
6. Do not apply any ointment on the face. If an ointment is steroidal drug, it would worsen the symptom.
