The Botox

Since it has been used as the remedy for strabismus in ophthalmology after getting an approval from FDA in America in 1989, Botox is used in neurology for facial spasm and myotonic reaction.. In the 1990s, the reaction to enhance wrinkles on face and neck was discovered. Today, it is a popular drug used to remove wrinkles.

Botox is a neurotoxin produced in the bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, which grows on rotten food. It suppresses the secretion of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that contracts muscles around the connecting area of nerve and muscle, thus, it causes a reverse reaction of the muscles. As a result, the muscles cannot be moved or are weakened.

How does Botox remove the wrinkles on the face?

The wrinkles on the face are classified into three depending on the cause: the expressional wrinkle that is made by the facial expression muscle, the wrinkles that are drooped down by the gravitational force and fine wrinkles that occur all over the face depending on the level of skin aging. The facial expression muscle causes the following types of wrinkles to appear: wrinkles on the forehead that is the most common type of thick wrinkles, fine wrinkles found under and around eyes and wrinkles between eyebrows. Botox weakens the function of such muscles to remove the wrinkles.

How is the Botox treatment performed?

The Botox treatment is simple, safe and high in the customer’s satisfaction level and is often called the 3S treatment. Botox is simply injected in 3-6 areas of the facial expression muscle such as around the wrinkles of eyes, between eyebrows and forehead. Such treatment brings good results without causing any complication. The time needed for this treatment is about 5-15 minutes and the pain is only a prick that is felt when the needle is injected. Anesthesia cream or an ice pack can be applied to subdue the pain during the treatment. There is no sign after the treatment so it is possible to put on makeup or return to daily activity. The effect of Botox occurs 24 hours later and after 1 week, one can get a full effect of the Botox treatment.

How long does the effect of Botox last?

The effect of Botox is very good but it is not permanent. The effect lasts 4-8 months and in general, it lasts for about 6 months. The level of the lasting effect varies depending on the level of muscle movement, a habit of facial expression, the durability against drug and so on. Thus, it is necessary to control the amount of Botox considering the difference of individuals.

Although the effect of Botox is not permanent, it is relatively simple, cheaper and almost free from side effects compared to wrinkle removal surgery or laser peeling. The treatment has a high demand among people who are seeking medical intervention for their beauty.

Is there any side effect of Botox treatment?

Like other drugs, Botox may have a side effect. Hence, the treatment has to be performed by a medical professional. If an inexperienced doctor administers the treatment, there may be a danger of having a facial palsy. However, such side effect rarely happens when an experienced and licensed cosmetic surgeon performs the treatment.

Even though such side effect occurs, it will disappear as time passes. Sometimes, there may be bruising around the injected area, headache or a heavy sensation on eyes for those who open their eyes using the muscles on the forehead. There is no need to worry because such side effects are temporary and will disappear as time goes by.
